“My father says my sister was born with luck and that I was lucky to be born”- this quote pretty much resumes how Zuko feels of himself. He firmly believes he doesn't need luck and that working hard it's the only path to achieve what he wants.
He, however, has quite a contradictory personality; but that's mostly because there's a fight within himself between what he wants and what he forced himself to believe he wanted. This also involves in what he believes it's right. Like Iroh says: 'there's a war between good and evil inside of you.'
On one hand there's his eternal search for approvement from his father. He was exhiled when he was 14 for arguing against a General's plan of war that consisted in sacrificing a handful of new recluited soldiers, Zuko thought that was inhumane. This was considerated as a severe offense against the fire nation so Zuko was challenged to a fire duel. He accepted but instead of facing the General he offended, it was his father. Noticing this, Zuko immediately gave up and begged for forgiveness, but his father saw this as an act of cowardly, being a higher offence against the firelord, and banished him; burning half of his son's face and telling him that he'll have to learn to be respectful the hard way.
The only way Zuko could return home and 'regain his honor' was capturing the avatar; which was a fool's journey because everybody thought the avatar was dead. Zuko, however, desperately clung to this Last hope to return to his homeland; being trained by his uncle (Iroh) during this time.
Two years later he found the avatar and the persecution begun; but when Zhao captured Aang, Zuko dressed as the Blue Spirit to 'kidnap' the Avatar and capture himself.
Thinking the Blue Spirit was an ally, Aang colaborated with him, but before they could scape the Blue Spirit was harmed and Aang discovered it was Zuko beneath the mask but the avatar still helped him. Once they were out, Aang asked him if he thought they could've been friends, which Zuko answered with a fire blast.
After that Zuko found himself betrayed by him tripulation because they were recruited by General Zhao, but him and his uncle disguised as soldiers and infiltrated his ship.
He found the avatar once again in the north pole and sucessed to kidnap him... at least for a while since he had no ship tp scape nor a plan. Aang was eventually rescued by his friends and once again saved Zuko from death (since he couldn't leave him there to freeze).
Zuko managed to scape when everyone were distracted by Zhao's doings, and when the avatar's rage took place for the murder of the moon, Zuko offered his hand to Zhao in order to help him, but he denied the help.
After that he and his uncle wondered off to the earth kingdom and, after being betrayed and labeled as traitors by Azula, they started a life of fugitives, travelling along different earth town without a real destination, just scaping from Azula and looking for shelter.
During this trip Zuko would mostly act angry, grumpy and edgy; refusing to settle down to a 'normal and paceful life' and let go of his obssesion. He would even travel alone for a period of time because of his uncle's insistency to find within his heart what he truly wants. Zuko would find himself uncapable of ignoring the people's situation, showing compasion for them and even ending helping them.
Eventually he would be reunited with his uncle and they would head of to Ba Sing Se, where, after helping the avatar Bison's to scape, Zuko would suffer a 'metamorphosis' (as his uncle called it).
This would generate a notable change on Zuko, whom finally would start seeing the optimist side of life and start enjoying their paceful days at Ba Sing Se (much to his Uncle happiness).
However, Azula finds them and sets a trap for them; soon brainwashing Zuko to help her capture the avatar and to finally be able to return home. Zuko struggles with himself as in to dp 'the right thing'; but he takes the descision to help his sister, betraying his uncle.
Azula defeats the avatar but gives all the credit to Zuko (which it's highly suspicious to him). But, even after getting back everything he believed he wanted from a long time ago, Zuko doesn't feels right with it, and the thought of having betrayed his uncle haunts him because all his life he represented a fatherly figure to him, thing that his real father would never be.
Making up his mind, Zuko finally decides to confront his father and leave the fire nation to join the avatar. Realizing that the fire nation wasn't as great as he forced himself to belive, it was cruel and instead of respecting it, the other nations loathed it.
He was about to face his father when he suddenly blacked out, waking up 9n luceti.
Zuko is a firebender, but being in luceti reduces drastically his bending. He also is a proficient twin sword fighter.
